What You Need Before You Fly
An International Driving Permit (IDP), issued in your home country, before you travel. This is the part people get wrong most often: you cannot obtain an IDP once you're in India. It has to be arranged at home — through your national motoring authority — and it has to cover motorcycles specifically, not just cars. If your home licence doesn't have a motorcycle endorsement, the IDP won't create one; get the endorsement first.
Your home country driving licence itself, with the motorcycle entitlement, carried alongside the IDP — the IDP is a translation of your licence, not a replacement for it. Bring both.
Your passport, for a copy to be taken at handover.
Why Commercial Registration Matters More For You, Not Less
Every bike we rent is commercially registered, which is what Uttarakhand law requires for any rental two-wheeler. For a foreign rider this matters twice over: it's what makes your travel insurance and our insurance valid, and it's what gets checked at the Char Dham and Chopta checkposts if you're heading that way. A private-plate "rental" from an informal operator can get you turned back at Sonprayag with no refund — ask to see the RC before you take any bike from anyone.
