Documents Required to Rent a Bike in Rishikesh

Short version: a valid two-wheeler driving licence and one photo ID. If you're visiting from abroad, your home licence plus an International Driving Permit — and you have to get the IDP before you leave home.

The longer version matters, because every season we turn away riders who arrived in Rishikesh assuming they could sort it out here. You can't.

If You Hold an Indian Licence

You need:

Original driving licence, valid for two-wheelers. Not a photocopy, not a photo on your phone, and not a learner's licence. A DigiLocker or mParivahan entry is acceptable to us and to the police.
One government photo ID — Aadhaar, passport or voter ID.
The security deposit — ₹1,000 for a scooty, ₹3,000 for a motorcycle.

A note on gearless licences. A licence endorsed for gearless vehicles only (LMV-NT restricted to scooters up to 50cc, or MCWOG) covers a scooty but not a Royal Enfield. If your licence is limited, we'll rent you an Activa and not a motorcycle.

If You're Visiting India

You need:

Your home country driving licence, with a motorcycle or scooter entitlement on it. A car-only licence is not enough for a motorcycle, and strictly speaking not for a 125cc scooter either.
An International Driving Permit (IDP). Issued in your own country, before you travel.
Your passport, for a copy.
The security deposit — ₹1,000 scooty, ₹3,000 motorcycle. If you'd rather leave your passport than the cash, we can do that instead.

The IDP is the part people get wrong

An International Driving Permit is a translation booklet issued alongside your existing licence by an authority in your own country — the AA or the Post Office in the UK, AAA in the United States, your automobile association in most of Europe and Australia. It takes a day or two and costs very little.

You cannot obtain one in India. Not in Delhi, not in Rishikesh, not from an agent who says he can. If you land without one, your options are to ride without it — uninsured and illegal — or not to ride. We won't help with the first.

Does anyone actually check?

Yes. Traffic police in Rishikesh and on the Haridwar road stop two-wheelers routinely, and they do check foreign riders. More importantly, an invalid licence voids the insurance. If you have a serious accident without a valid entitlement, you are personally liable for everything — the other party's medical costs included. That's the real reason we're strict about it, not the fine.

What You Don't Have to Provide

No credit card. Deposits are cash or UPI.
No advance payment. You pay when you collect.
No hotel booking or return ticket.
No Indian phone number, though it helps if you have one. WhatsApp is fine.
No visa paperwork. Any valid visa is fine.

Check the Bike's Papers Too

Your documents are only half of it. In Uttarakhand, a two-wheeler rented out to the public must be commercially registered. Plenty of shops in Rishikesh rent privately registered bikes because they're cheaper to buy and cheaper to run.

Riding one means:

The insurance doesn't cover a paying rider, so a claim will be refused
You can be fined and the vehicle impounded
The checkposts on the Char Dham and Chopta routes will turn you back — often several hours into the ride

Every vehicle we rent is commercially registered. Ask to see the RC when you collect. Any shop that hesitates has told you what you need to know.

Age and Experience Requirements

Minimum age 18, with a valid two-wheeler licence.
For the Himalayan 450 and Guerrilla 450 we ask for prior experience on a 350cc or larger motorcycle. This isn't negotiable — those are 40-horsepower machines and Rishikesh's ghat roads are a poor classroom.
Never ridden a two-wheeler at all? Take an Activa. It's automatic, and we'll spend ten minutes with you in the lane before you go anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can foreigners rent a bike in India?

Yes. You need your home country driving licence with a motorcycle entitlement and an International Driving Permit issued in your own country before you travel.

Do I need an Indian driving licence to ride in Rishikesh?

No. A valid foreign licence plus an IDP is legally sufficient for the length of a tourist visit.

Can I get an International Driving Permit in India?

No. IDPs are issued only to residents of the issuing country, by an authority in that country. Get yours at home.

What if I only have a car licence?

Then legally you can't ride a motorcycle here, and strictly a 125cc scooter is also outside a car-only entitlement. We won't rent to you on a car-only licence.

Is a learner's licence enough?

No.

Do you accept a DigiLocker or mParivahan licence?

Yes. Digital licences issued through the government apps are valid and we accept them.

Can I use my passport instead of a cash deposit?

Yes, if you'd prefer. Most people would rather keep the passport and leave the money.

Do I need to book in advance?

No, and there's nothing to pay to reserve. But during Char Dham season and the September–October window, the Royal Enfields go fast — give us a week if you can.

What if I lose my licence during the rental?

Tell us immediately. Riding without it is a problem for you and for the insurance.
